Equal Pay Day 2023: Our Continued Battle for Equality
Today marks a significant date in the calendar – Equal Pay Day. It's come around again so quickly. This day is a stark reminder of the ongoing gender pay gap and symbolises how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. It's not just a date; it's a call to action, a reminder of the progress we've made and the journey ahead.
At MAAREE, we recognise the importance of this day. Our foundation is built on the principle of empowering women - whether it's through innovative sportswear like our Battle Bra or our societal contributions. We understand that empowerment isn't just about physical support; it's about standing together in the fight for equality.

What is Equal Pay Day?
Equal Pay Day is not just a date but a powerful symbol. It marks the day from which women effectively start to work for free for the remainder of the calendar year compared to their male counterparts, considering the current gender pay gap. This day changes each year, reflecting the ongoing wage disparity between men and women. It serves as a poignant reminder of the inequalities that still exist in our society and underscores the need for continual advocacy and action to achieve true pay equality. By observing Equal Pay Day, we bring attention to the complex factors contributing to the wage gap, including systemic discrimination and differences in industry and role choices.
Introducing The Fawcett Society
The Fawcett Society, a pioneering organisation in the UK, has been at the forefront of advocating for gender equality and women's rights for over 150 years. Named after Millicent Fawcett, a leading suffragist, the society continues her legacy by fighting for a world where women's rights and opportunities are equal to those of men. Their mission encompasses a broad spectrum of issues, including closing the gender pay gap, campaigning for equal power, and challenging gender stereotypes and norms. The Fawcett Society's relentless efforts have made them an iconic figure in the movement towards gender parity.
Reflecting on Progress
It's essential to recognise the strides made towards closing the gender pay gap. Organisations like The Fawcett Society, with whom we proudly partnered last year, have been instrumental in advocating for women's rights and equality. Our collaboration on the Battle Bra on the last Equal Pay Pay in 2022 was more than a product launch; it was a testament to our shared values and commitment to this cause.
In 2022, Equal Pay Day fell on November 20th, this year it's fallen on November 22nd. Meaning it's progressed positively by two days. But at this glacial pace, it still has a long way to go.
The Battle Bra: A Catalyst for Change
MAAREE Battle Bra - Plum
Last year, our Battle Bra campaign in collaboration with The Fawcett Society was more than just the launch of a new product; it was a powerful campaign for change. We uniquely tied the product to the cause by offering an option to either save or donate 11.3% of the proceeds – representing the 2022 gender pay gap* – to support The Fawcett Society's vital work. The Battle Bra itself, with its state-of-the-art design and superior functionality, became a symbol of strength and empowerment. Representing the battle all women continue to face fighting for gender equality.

Moving Forward: How We Continue the Fight

By supporting products and organisations that align with these values, we make a statement and contribute to meaningful change.
As we observe Equal Pay Day, let's not only reflect on the progress made but also recommit to the actions necessary to move forward. Thank you for being part of our community that stands for equality, empowerment, and progress.
